Junior Embedded Firmware Engineer • Emeryville, CA

Job Description:

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide firmware support at the bare-metal level to assist with development and maintenance of frozen beverage blenders. The core work will be the writing, maintaining, and documenting of real-time firmware on the Microchip dsPIC 16-bit family of microcontrollers in the C language. In addition, the position will allow for growth beyond embedded C work through troubleshooting of electrical systems and working with the associated embedded Linux applications as well.

This person will report to the manager of Engineering and Product Development and work as part of a team responsible for the development and operation of f’real’s products. The firmware engineer will be an integral part of a team which has individuals specializing in mechanical, electrical, software, manufacturing, and industrial design. Understanding and responding to the needs of other teams, such as customer support and marketing, is required. This person will be required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with his/her immediate work group, f’real at large, as well as personnel from outside subcontractors and suppliers. Explaining technical trade-offs and assisting with the decision-making process in conjunction with associates will be required.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Act as an individual contributor writing and maintaining firmware for the engineering team
  • Create new designs and modify existing designs with a system level perspective
  • Modify, document and debug existing firmware to meet requirements through the change control process
  • Track and manage individual projects, plan and take adaptive action, prepare status reports
  • Participate in hardware and firmware design reviews
  • Some electronics troubleshooting with oscilloscopes and related tools
  • Provide advice and guidance to others in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of f’real’s products
  • Prepare and carry out protocols for design verification, system characterization, and validation testing
  • Prepare reports, and presentations of results, propose and carry out solutions


Desired Skills & Experience:

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years relevant experience developing and troubleshooting firmware
  • Expertise with C and/or C++ firmware in baremetal applications
  • Familiarity with Microchip dsPIC/PIC 16-bit microcontrollers
  • Hands on experience troubleshooting electronics in a microcontroller driven system
  • Ability to read electrical schematics
  • Experience with PID motor control and tuning
  • Experience with GITHUB or similar source code repository system
  • Strong analytical skills – able to easily analyze data, and then reach conclusions and drive implications
  • Experience and willingness to create documentation associated with firmware requirements
  • Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical principles
  • Excellent hands-on prototyping abilities
  • Familiar with Linux command line, scripting, and programming languages (PERL, JAVASCRIPT, HTML, CGI…).
  • Awareness of UL, TUV, FCC, CE, IEC, CSA requirements for equipment development

Job Requirements

  • Occasional travel required for field visits, customer and company meetings
